BYRNE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2006
This wine from Mahi is a single-estate wine that expresses
the particular vineyard from which it comes. The grapes
are handpicked and the wines made simply, with the focus
being on gentle handling and indigenous yeast ferments.
This wine comes from a particular parcel in the Byrne
Vineyard, located in the Conder’s Bend area of Marlborough.
The vines are planted on the old Wairau riverbed which
is particularly stoney. The base of deep gravels means
there is excellent drainage coupled with some heat retention
and reflection. The soils and positioning of this vineyard
help create wines that are well-structured with good intensity
and length.
In the winery the hand-picked grapes were whole-bunch
pressed and taken to both French barriques and tank for
fermentation. The barrel portion went through ferment with
indigenous yeast, and was kept on lees for 5 months before
racking and bottling.
This wine reflects its stony soils and cooler climate
with citrus notes, a fine, lean middle palate and a strong
persistent finish.
The wines of Mahi are not rushed to bottle and we believe
that with correct storage this wine will continue to
develop in interest and complexity.
