FRANCIS
SAUVIGNON BLANC 2007
This wine comes from a particular parcel in the Francis Vineyard, located in the Thompson Ford area of Marlborough. This vineyard is located closer to the sea than the winery, and slightly to the northern side of the
Wairau Valley.
The vines are planted on the old Wairau riverbed which has left a layer of silt overlying clay and deep gravels. The soils are very even across the vineyard which makes management and picking much easier, as we get quite consistent fruit flavours across the vines.
The siltier soils give a great weight to the wine and more tropical fruit flavours, rather than citrus, and produces wines that are particularly complex on the palate.
In the winery the hand picked grapes were whole-bunch pressed and taken to French barriques for fermentation with indigenous yeast. After 10 months in barrel the wine was racked and bottled.
In 2007 we were very lucky as the weather worked in our favour, ensuring there was no climatic or disease pressure forcing us to pick when we didn't want to. Earlier in the season the cool temperatures during flowering meant that crops were generally low. This suits the style that we aim for at Mahi, allowing the grapes to ripen fully and providing wines with great palate weight.
